Excursions from Osmington Bay

Abbotsbury Swannery
Watch the family life of the swans at close quarters in surroundings little changed since before 1400AD.

Brownsea Island
Brownsea Island is a National Trust property, located in the centre of Poole harbour, and is reached by a 20 minute ferry boat ride from Poole quay.  The island boasts 500 acres of woodland, 200 of which is a Nature Reserve where peacocks, red squirrel and deer roam wild.  There is also a nature trail which groups may wish to follow, numerous safe sandy beaches, superb harbour views and good picnicking areas.

Corfe Castle
This is one of the most impressive ruins in England and an important medieval royal fortification commanding a cleft in the Purbeck Hills. Bought in 1635 by Sir John Bankes, Attorney General to Charles I, and surrendered by his wife, Lady Bankes, to the parliamentary forces after treachery in 1646.  Today its ruins stand on a hill at the only natural route through the Purbeck Hills.

Dinosaur Museum
Fossils, skeletons and life-size reconstructions combined with audiovisual and interactive displays to inform and entertain.

Kents Cavern
A spectacular underground world and system of show caves, where the guide will lead you on a storytelling tour, thought to be one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain.  An educational programme has been designed both during the cave visit and in the form of classroom study materials.  A choice of topics are available – Early Times, Rocks & Minerals, Once upon a Cave and the Kents Cavern Story.

Lulworth Cove
The Coach House at Lulworth Cove, famous for its natural horse shoe harbour, is now playing a very different role from the one for which it was built in the 1780’s – the stabling of horses for visitors to the Cove Hotel.  See Lulworth past and present – from earliest geology to present day life and nature conservation.

Portland Castle
This survives today as one of the best preserved of Henry VIII’s great chain of coastal forts, built to counter the threat of invasion from France and Spain.

Blue Reef Aquarium
Blue Reef aims to take children on a journey to explore the drama of the British coast, the underwater gardens of the Mediterranean and the dazzling beauty of a spectacular coral reef.  Over 40 living displays reveal the sheer variety of life in the deep; from sharks and lobsters to seahorses and tropical fish.

Timewalk
An audio visual museum taking you on a journey through time, revisiting many aspects of Weymouth’s varied past, including the Black Death, Spanish Armada, English Civil War and Georgian Weymouth.

Tutankhamun Exhibition
Walk through the tomb filled with treasure and see the recreation of Tutankhamun’s mummy and gold mask.
