News and Media: Charlotte Fenn Update

27 September 2011

Charlotte Fenn takes us through her successful summer of sailing competitions and training.

Over the past few months I've had many new experiences and been involved with a lot of new boats. First of all I went match racing in SB3's with the Kent team.  It was a three day event with one day of training and two days of match racing. Fortunately, on the training day there was a force 3-4 breeze which enabled us to get a chance to practise on the new boat.

The next event I attended was with the Kent Sailing Schools at Sandwich Bay in Kent.  I didn't sail, but spent the weekend coaching with some of my old coaches which was a really good experience as I was able to improve and develop some of my coaching skills. Following on from Sandwich Bay, a team of six Kent sailors, myself included, travelled to Bough Beech reservoir near Sevenoaks, where we took part in the Team Racing Nationals, sailing Fireflies - a new boat to all of us in the Kent team. The first day didn't go too well as our team wasn't used to team racing, but on the second day we managed to win all our races and won the bronze fleet overall.

On my weekends off I've been involved in coaching the younger cadets at my sailing club, helping to improve their sailing ability, which has been a lot of fun and a great experience for me.

My next big event was the National Sailing Schools Association week long regatta at Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire. Over the past few years I have sailed different boats at this event and this year I sailed an RS200 with my brother, Daniel, who usually sails Spitfire catamarans. It was our first time sailing the RS200 together and the event went really well. We finished 12th in the fast handicap fleet, being the 4th RS200 out of 7, in a fleet of 31 boats. Sailing the RS200 was such great fun that I’m hoping to buy one (with help from a friend at my club) and attend training and events in it.

After Grafham, I had a week off and then shot off to my sailing club for sea week, during which I completed my Dinghy Instructor Course, so I am now fully qualified. I’m hoping to gain more qualifications over the next year.

I've really enjoyed my summer, and sailing in a range of boats has really widened my options for when I move out of my Laser. Now that the Olympics are trying to have mixed helms and crews, I'm hoping to move on to a double handed monohull to prepare me for an Olympic class boat.

Thanks for all your support
