News and Media: Supporting Healthier Eating Habits

20 June 2006

A few days at a PGL centre is unlikely to change the habits of a lifetime, but PGL wants to inspire young people with healthy activity in the outdoors and encourage them to eat better, balanced meals.

We aim to work in partnership with schools and parents to help reverse the much-publicised threefold increase in obesity in the under 15’s.

Changing young people’s negative attitudes to the outdoors and exercise lies at the core of PGL’s ethos, and we have now reviewed the meals we offer at our centres and looked at how to make them healthier to complement the rest of the PGL experience.

So, how will our menus change?

In essence we will strive to produce meals which are home cooked and which avoid the use of processed foods.

Above all, they will be Fresh, Tasty and Nutritious !

Our catering partner, Sodexho, already works with many schools taking part in Jamie Oliver’s “Feed Me Better!” campaign and we have borrowed heavily from these principles.

In addition we have consulted with a team of nutrition experts. As a result we have introduced a range of initiatives to provide children with a healthier choice, meeting DfES guidelines. All our menus meet the Food Standards introduced in September 2006.

In addition, and new for 2007, we are highlighting an evening meal choice that if selected will meet all the nutritional standards in advance of the standards that the DfES will be introducing in September 2007.

5 a day

Fresh fruit will be available at every meal
At least one hot fresh vegetable will be served each day
There will be a choice of salad at lunch and dinner

Less Salt

No salt will be added in any cooking
Salt will be in a separate area and not on the tables

Less Fat

All meat will be trimmed to remove excess fat
We will not serve reprocessed meat products
Rapeseed oil will be used for frying
Sunflower spread will be available as well as butter

Beverages

Water will be available at all meals
Semi skimmed milk will be available at breakfast
Squash falls outside DfES guidelines, but will be available on request.

PGL always welcomes your feedback, and in view of these major changes we would be delighted to discuss any aspect of our catering with you. Enjoy your PGL meal!
